• Notes

  Because Sarah’s mother was a single woman she took her mother’s surname, Bullen. Arber may or may not have been the surname of her father. A DNA match on Ancestry.co.uk proposes Adam Whitby as her biological father. More research needed. The 1881 Census records Sarah as a General Servant (Domestic) to Joseph Pateman, an unmarried retired farmer who was also born in Wimpole. The presence of Bullens in the village can be traced back to at least the 17th century. The book ‘Ordwella to Orwell’ by Sue Miller (p.44) records the presence in Orwell of a local building company called Rayner & Bullen, founded in 1946, a major employer in Orwell for 30 years with around 100 people on the payroll at times, working from premises at Fisher’s Lane and at Barton. They built the first stage of the Meadowcroft Way estate, as well as several bungalows on Stocks Lane and at other places around the village, eventually being taken over by Mills & Douglas in 1977.
