  In the 1861 Census, Joseph and Elizabeth are in Seavington St Michael aged 26 and 23 respectively. Joseph gave his occupation as labourer. Joseph is listed in the 1881 Census as an agricultural labourer living at Malt House, Seavington St Mary, Somerset. At the 1901 Census, aged 65, he is again an ordinary agricultural labourer, but living at Hop Houses, Orchard Portman Scattered Houses, Somerset in the ecclesiastical parish of Orchard Portman St Michael. Elizabeth Ash (62) is still with him. Judy and David Ash visited Orchard Portman in July 2017, where they met the vicar and explored both the churchyard and the church. They could find no reference to either Joseph or his wife anywhere.
