  Charles was an agricultural labourer on the Somerset Levels. We first meet him on the 1841 Census for Seavington St Mary with his first wife Amelia and two young children, Joseph (5) and Emma (4). Their third child would arrive three years later. He then appears on the 1851 Census living with his second wife Mary, a weaver, and their three children in Seavington St Michael. Charles' widowed mother, Susan (80), is living with them. Amelia had died young in Nov 1847 aged 36. Charles married Mary Foot of Seavington St Mary four years later in 1850. Charles and Mary appear on the 1861 Census for Seavington St Michael, apparently living next door to Charles's son by his first marriage, Joseph, who is with his new wife Elizabeth. Also nearby, perhaps in the same street, were Charles's elder brothers John and James with their wives, both named Mary, and Charles's two nieces, in their early 20s, Elizabeth and Susan, daughters of James and Mary. In 1871, Charles & Mary were still living next door to son & daughter-in-law Joseph & Elizabeth, who had two boys, Charles (9) and Thomas (7). Both men were still agricultural labourers. Both Charles and his 2nd wife seem to have been illiterate, as was Charles’ mother, who made her mark on the marriage certificate as ‘Susan’.
