  By 1891, when he was just 16, Arthur was working as a butcher for his German father George Leonard Rengert. By the 1901 Census, aged 26, he had left home to marry Edith (24) and had set up on his own (‘Butcher/Own Account’). The newlyweds lived at 17 Wernbrook Street, alongside Plumstead Common, nearly 8 miles from Arthur's family home. In 1911, Arthur & Edith, together with their children Arthur (9), Edith (8), Archibald (4) and Jack (6m) were living at 24 Nottingham Road, Isleworth, just west of Kew Gardens. The family were in Eltham by the 1920s. According to Maggie Rengert, their great niece, Arthur and Edith lived there in a house owned by the Co-op. This is confirmed by her aunt Dora, who was interviewed by David Ash in February 2003. ‘He worked at the Co-op and they supplied houses at the Co-op for their assistants ... in Eltham... I used to go and see him Sunday mornings with my father (Andrew Rengert).’ On the 1939 England & Wales register, Arthur gave his profession as butcher and indicated that he was serving as an ARP warden.
