• Notes

There is a record of the christening of a Charles Kelman on 15 May 1834 in Keith, the town where Agnes and Marion Kelman were born. If this is the right person, that makes Charles 28 on his wedding day. The Register of Marriages in the District of Old Machar for 1862 confirms that he did indeed marry at 28 and that he was already a solicitor by the time he did so. The 1861 Census records Charles Kelman, aged 26 and still unmarried, as the head of a household in Mid Street, Keith. He was living there with his sister Agnes and his occupation was listed as ‘solicitor courts Banff & Elgin’. He had also appeared in the 1851 Census living at home with his parents and working as a solicitor's apprentice. By the time of the 1871 Census, Charles had married Marion and the first three children had been born. The family lived in The Square, Keith in the county of Banff, north-west of Aberdeen along what is now the A96. In 1881, Charles & Marion Kelman with Catherine, Agnes and Marion were living at the 200 The Square, Keith. The Moray, Scotland, Local Heritage Index 1632-2014 has the note ‘Solicitor : lived in London’.
