  Marion appears on the 1851 Census aged 11 and living with her parents at 7 Union Row, Old Machar, Aberdeen. Her elder brothers Alexander (21), Robert (20) and William (15) are also present. Marion, her parents' only daughter (she had eight brothers), married from her home at 220 Union Street, Aberdeen. She is listed in the 1901 Census as living at 20 Belsize Crescent, Hampstead, London NW3 5QU, a house which she was sharing with her daughter, Katherine (33), now Mrs Topping; Katherine's sister Agnes (34); Katherine's son Walter Darling (13) and daughter Molly (10); and Marion's sister-in-law Mary Ness (47). There was also a boarder, Lucy C Hempson (27), a school teacher, and a cook, Annie G Levell (17). Kelman Topping, Marion's third grandchild, is known to have been at a boarding school in Kent at the time of the Census. Belsize Crescent appears on the Booth Poverty Map of 1899 as a middle class, well-to-do street set in the midst of even more expensive houses.
